Finally a break in my photo drought! I saw this gorgeous girl today on King Street and had to stop her when I realised that her shoelaces tied in with the colours on her dress, how cute!

The calm before the storm

I haven't posted for a few days, mainly because I haven't really been taken by any fashion I've seen. This is probably my own fault, as I've been holed up housesitting and avoiding crowded places. The good news - the cold weather has finally reached us! As usual, we had about 3 days of 'autumn' and now we are straight into rain, storms and howling winds. That makes me happy because it means layers, boots and a whole new range of fashion choices! Now, to get me out of my warm apartment and onto the streets to snap the style...

Once upon a bow

This is my gorgeous friend, who very kindly allowed me to photograph her! Her look today is very sweet and fresh, but balanced out with some tough ankle boots in black. Mixing masculine and feminine pieces is going to be a popular look this season, hopefully we Perthians will embrace it!

Changing seasons

We've finally had some cooler weather, which you would normally expect in May! Cooler temperatures are great for fashion, as we bring out the boots, scarves and layers. Now is the perfect time to be combining our summery dresses with aspects of our winter wardrobe. As you can see in the background, we've even had some coloured leaves - my favourite part of Autumn!

Breaking the mould

If you've ever been to Perth, you'll be familiar with the usual men's outfits... shorts, t-shirt and thongs. This was an absolute breath of fresh air on an otherwise unremarkable day. I love the fact that he is carrying a satchel which is very rarely seen on guys here. Preppy with a twist.

The city that sleeps too much

If New York is the city that never sleeps, then Perth is the city that sleeps too much. The most isolated city in the world, where everything closes at 5pm and the inhabitants are never in a rush. The laid back attitude that prevails is infectuous, luring in people from all over the world to leave begind their manic lifestyles and indulge in the leisurely pace.

This easy life does not, however, lend itself easily to fashion. Sky high heels worn during the day are eyed off judgmentally by onlookers with whispers of 'Who does she think she is?', warm temperatures all year round do not a layered look make and jeans and t-shirts prevail in all but the most corporate of workplaces. Above all, the casual attitude that is so loved has created an atmosphere where anyone who dares to be different is seen as eccentric and strange, rather than unique and beautiful.

This blog will be dedicated to style and beauty in Perth, Australia, which I catch glimpses of in my wanderings, and always marvel at how it manages to survive, even here, in this most isolated city in the world. While a lot of my posts will focus on fashion, I also hope to include snippets of architectural and natural beauty, which all combine to cultivate the fledgling culture of our city.
